This past weekend, I went home to visit my family in Northern Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC. I hadn’t been there in a while, and I’ve lived in North Carolina for 17 years now, so I feel more at home as a North Carolinian than I do a Virginian. Anyway, as I was traveling on the roads up there, I realized that the traffic in Northern Virginia is absolutely terrible! I have a Disney friend in the area that writes for both Chip & Company and for The Magical Blogorail, and I don’t see how she handles the traffic up there!
Anyway, as I was navigating my way through traffic lights and on ramps, past cars going too slow, and being passed by cars driving like maniacs, I started thinking about the things at Walt Disney World that I love the most. So today, my friends, I’m going to write to you about one of those things.
One of my favorite things about Walt Disney World is getting the feeling that you are stepping back in time the moment you enter Magic Kingdom. To me, in a lot of ways, the best part of going to Disney World is seeing the nostalgic Main Street, U.S.A., and smelling the popcorn from the popcorn vendor working the street, and hearing the steam train whistle blow as it passes overhead towards it’s next destination.
In addition to the bygone nature that is Main Street, U.S.A., there are other great places in Magic Kingdom that you can experience some of the same nostalgia. Take one step into Liberty Square, and immediately you are thrown back into a time long gone, one where the USA was just a dream, not a reality yet, and still to be determined. Head on over to Frontierland, and look at the wild west as we can only imagine.
In addition to the look and feel of the lands, exploring some of the attractions is like stepping back in time. Explore Swiss Family Treehouse, and you can almost imagine that you are shipwrecked, and have made a new home out of a tree.
Even over in Tomorrowland, that bustling land devoted to the future that tomorrow brings, there is a unique and special attraction that I love to see every time we visit, that takes me back to when technology was new — and not always reliable. Can you guess which one I’m talking about? Yep, I was referring to the Carousel of Progress. This unique circle theater, where the “actors” stay in the same screen, but the audience rotates, is one of my favorites. I love seeing the technology progression through the 20th century, with the advent of electrical wiring, indoor appliances, and so forth.
One of my favorite things is to imagine myself living in the bygone eras of yesterday, and when we visit Walt Disney World, we are able to do just that. What do you enjoy most about visiting Walt Disney World? Feel free to comment, or post comments on our Facebook page or via Twitter! Have a great day!
You listed most of my favorite things about Magic Kingdom. As you know I am not quite daring enough for the thrill rides, but a thrill for me is walking down Main Street and strolling through Liberty Square. Carousel of Progress is also a favorite of ours. I remember when I was a teen and we had just gotten back from our very first trip to WDW, my mom sang the theme song constantly. It is a special memory I have associated with that attraction.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Beth, and that it brought back such good memories for you! It just goes to show that a little imagination will create a blog post from almost any situation!
Aww I missed you! But you know, I commute to Arlington…. 31 miles.. It DOES suck. Luckily, I'll be enjoying the Carousel of Progress sooner than later, so I can think about peaceful times!
I know! Sorry I didn't think to reach out to you, so maybe next time. I know how bad the traffic is up there, until I moved down here my last job in NoVA was driving from Manassas to Reston. Thanks for posting!
