God's Wrath

Prayers for the Week – God’s Wrath

Romans 1:18-32 (ESV)

18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
24Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
26For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
28And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

Hello everyone, and welcome to this week’s Prayers for the Week post. Today we are starting a hard lesson, understanding how we are under God’s Wrath and what we can do to change that. This world is so full of chaos, clutter, confusion, anger, and hatred, and until we know why that is, we will never have the opportunity to change it.

My prayer for this post is that God would use these words I’m writing to drill down deep into all of our souls and see where we are lacking, with the aim of improving ourselves, and by extension, improving the world around us.

The opening chapter in the Apostle Paul’s letter to the people of Rome is a hard word for us all to hear. The sad fact is that our world we live in is fallen; we have girls being killed and left in the woods; we have people battling cancer; we have sorrow and sadness all around, no matter where we turn. So much of this is because we have turned away from God. Now, this is not to say that if we were 100% focused on God, that our lives would be perfect and that we wouldn’t be going through these things. That is not necessarily the case.

However, a big key for us to remember is this: When we turn our attention to God, and call on His Guidance, His Peace, His Love, and His Strength, He will see us through the trials and tribulations, and we will be better off than we would otherwise be.

The beauty of the Bible is that God’s Hope for us all is found throughout. Even though we have the hard truth of Romans 1:18-32, we also have the incredible words of John 3:16. 16“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Our world is in upheaval. The only one that can change that is God and His Son, Jesus Christ. We may not be able to change the world on our own, but we can pray to God that He would use us to help bring that change to the world. Change that transcends politics, that transcends all of the normal things that we complain about in our day to day lives. Change that brings more and more people to God as His adopted children. That is the change that our world needs to see.

For now, you can start that process by praying along with our prayer requests and praises.

God's Got This

Prayers for the Week – God’s Got This

God's Got This

7for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. ~ 2Timothy 1:7 (ESV)

Hello everyone, and thank you for joining us in our weekly prayers for the week post.  Last week I spent the week in Orlando at a training session for my travel agent business, and returned home last night.  I was supposed to return home on Friday evening, but a security incident at the airport caused me to miss my connecting flight and as a result my flight was rescheduled. Briefly what happened was a battery exploded at the airport, and it caused a panic because people thought it was a gunshot. That caused an evacuation of the terminal, and then everyone had to go back through security again.

Throughout all of that, though, the terminal was calm, people did what had to be done, and really no one that I encountered seemed angry or let their temper get the best of them. In honesty, it surprised me that more people didn’t get angry at the mass chaos that was going on but I commended one mom who was telling her child that they had to walk back to the terminal to be rechecked.  She was calm and was explaining to her child that we needed to do that for safety reasons.  Many people could have been angry at this time, but like she said to me, getting angry over the circumstances wouldn’t help — it’s not like getting angry would cause them to change their minds about going through security again.

Throughout it all, the overwhelming thought I had time and time again was that we had nothing to fear; that God’s got this and that He would take care of His children. That was a great thought to have and I relied on it throughout. God’s got this — and He’s got all of our prayer requests taken care of as well, so please continue reading with me our prayer requests and praises.

Prayer Requests & Praises

  • We have an anonymous prayer request: Matt and I are pregnant, but things are not going as they should. I’ve been to the doctor all week for blood work to monitor my HcG levels, and when they should have doubled in numbers, they’ve only increased by 100 miU/mL.
    I’m scheduled to return tomorrow for more bloodwork, and we really need your prayers. I already feel God’s plan working out as He intends it. But there are challenges present in either outcome, and they’re hard to comprehend.
  • Mrs. Lucas has a praise for her friend Madge that we had been praying for: I have a praise! My friend Madge, who had heart surgery and was in ICU for a week. She is finally in Rehab and sounds great! She is getting stronger everyday! Madge and I appreciate your powerful prayers! God Bless!
  • We have an anonymous prayer request: So tomorrow we take our 5 month old to see a neurosurgeon…he has what has been diagnosed as craniosynostosis. This is where at least one of the sutures in the skull closes prematurely (they usually close around 2-3yrs of age to allow for the brain to grow). It seems to be common, happening about 1 in 2000 births, and is more common in males. We thank God that he currently does not seem to have and cognitive development issues from it, and it doesn’t seem to affect him in any way. It’s looking like surgery to reshape his skull followed by a helmet. We will know more tomorrow after our appointment. If surgery is our option we just pray that he is young enough for the endoscopic procedure. And we will pray that God guides the surgeons hands throughout his surgery. To my family in this group, we have not put this publicly on FaceBook yet.
    We just want our little boy to continue to be the happy baby he is and we want to get through this obstacle in his health so he can continue to grow.
    Thank you in advance for your prayers.
  • Lynn has a prayer request: Hi everyone.
    I have a prayer request for a friend of mine since high school. Her son was just hit by a car while driving his moped home from work. Lots of cuts, pain when breathing and head hurting.
  • Karen has praises and prayer requests: I have an amazing praise to share as well as an almost equally tragic prayer request. My praise is that my SIL, my brother, and myself have all received jobs at Amazon with amazing benefits! My prayer request is for my SILs hairdresser. She was just diagnosed with cancer, at 7 months pregnant, with only a week or so to live. They are trying to hold old for the baby as long as they can, but it’s such a tragedy. She is just the sweetest young woman, and I can’t even imagine what her family and husband are going through in these times.
    • Lord please be with that family and keep them close to You. If it is Your Will please heal her and keep the family whole. Also Lord we lift up praises to you for Karen and her family and their jobs. In His name we pray. Amen

Now, please close with us by praying the prayer that Jesus taught His Disciples and us to pray:

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.

Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those that trespass against us.

Lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the Kingdom, and Power, and Glory
Forever and ever. Amen.

Praise the Lord! ~ Psalm 150 (ESV)

Hello, and welcome to this week’s prayers for the week post.  Today we are praising God for all that He does for us.  This is a prayer post that is going to have some prayer requests in it, but let us also be about the business of praising God! Let’s get right to it, shall we?

Prayer Requests & Praises

  • Mark starts us off with a very sad prayer request: A soldier in my Reserve unit took is own life Tuesday evening. He is survived by his mother, father, two brothers and estranged wife. I ask that you put his family in your prayers.
  • Mikel has a big praise from Montana: A big thank you to you all who prayed for Montana! Yesterday it started raining – a nice steady rain that won’t rash away the dirt that is left after the burned trees – we even have snow in the mountains! God is good!
  • Jodi passes along thanks and continued prayers: Just wanted to say thank you for all the prayers during Hurricane Irma! We made it through safe and sound. We had some water leakage that insurance is checking out tomorrow. It may be builder warranty since our house is under 10 yrs old, so hopefully repairs will be covered one way or the other.
    The eye wall passed directly over our area. They were predicting 100+mph winds, but fortunately it *only* got up to about 85. Lots of downed trees, fences, signs, etc., all over town, and power was out for several hours (12 hrs for us). Some areas are still without electricity! We feel very blessed that damage was much less than it could have been!
    Please continue prayers for those who did have major losses and who have a long way to get back to normal.
  • Paul has a praise for his daughter Patricia, who lives in West Palm Beach: Yes, thank-you for your prayers! Praise God! She is fine!
  • Lori has a praise and a prayer request wrapped up together: During Irma, there was one story I never posted but I feel compelled to share now….
    I have a friend in Detroit who has most of her family (30+) in FL (unbeknownst to me until last weekend). None of them would leave and chose to weather it out.
    We waited, prayed…and waited & prayed again…and then finally got word late Monday that all of them had made it through!!! Then very early Tuesday morning, my friend texted me that her 96 year-old “Gpa” had passed away (natural causes).
    I can not help but think that he hung around long enough to make sure his family all got through it! May he Rest In Peace – a life well done!
  • Lori has a praise for the prayer request for “Jeff from Cape Coral, FL” from last week on how he managed the storm: He IS! I just heard tonight and by the Grace of God, with very little damage!
  • Lori has a prayer request for her sister Jan: My sister, Jan, is sick, very sick with what sounds like pneumonia to me. PLEASE she is not as strong as me, and I am really scared. Anyone listening, please say a prayer!
  • Lori also has a prayer request for Ronnie: Please lift Ronnie up in Prayer, he is about to greet those most Heavenly Gates!
  • I’ve got a big praise celebrating my Mom and her 75th birthday!
  • Lastly, another big praise with the start of the 2017-18 Men’s Study Bible Study this past Tuesday!

Prayers for the Week – A Season for everything

season

1For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
2 a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
3 a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6 a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7 a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8 a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace. ~ Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (ESV)

Hello everyone, and thank you for joining with us on our weekly prayers for the week post.  As we learn in the book of Ecclesiastes, there is a season for all things in God’s plan.  We know that there is a time to live, and a time to die.  There is a time to break down, and a time to build up. There is a time for everything.

This week has been an extremely hard one for so many of us, and you will hear all about them in our prayer requests and praises that we will lift up further down.  Starting us off, though, I want to take a moment and talk about Daniel, the young man that we have been lifting up in prayer for over four years.  This past Tuesday, though, the Lord called Daniel home.  We remember Daniel with love, even though we have never met him, and we celebrate the life he lived despite being afflicted with such a hard illness.  He met that illness head on, and never wavered in his love of the Lord because of it.  He leaves behind his wife Amanda and daughter Cate, and we lift them up every day for God’s Strength, Peace, Comfort, and Love to surround them.

The prayers for Amanda and Cate are just the beginning, so please continue reading with us as we carry on our Prayer Requests and Praises below.

Prayer Requests & Praises

  • Please pray for all of those in the path of Hurricane Irma, Jose, and Katia, and for all of those that have already faced the wrath of these storms.  Please pray as well for all of those that had to leave their homes, and for any affected in any way from the storms.
    • Paul has a prayer request: My daughter, Patricia, is in the West Palm Beach area and is staying to ride out the storm. There is no gas and roads are packed. Please keep her and her friends in your prayers.
    • Please pray for Jodi, who is in the path, and my cousin James over in Tampa.
    • Please pray for all of my friends who live in Florida who had to stay.
    • Please keep “Jeff in Cape Coral, FL” in your Prayers….for whatever reason, he is not willing to share more than that. His sister, Diane, is a good friend of mine in MN….her brother is going to “ride this out” – he is on the west side of the point of FL!
  • Please continue praying for my cousin Barb and her husband Tim for healing for his cancer.
  • Please continue praying for my cousin Deb and her husband Donnie for healing from his stomach issues.
  • Hayden has a prayer request for his Mom: I’d appreciate prayers for my mom. She is having her second cornea replacement surgery this am due to the fact her body didn’t accept the first one about 5 weeks ago. She’s needing the surgery due to her chemo and the chemo is what kept the first one from working. She’s in remission from her bone cancer but now is dealing with side effects from the chemo. Please remember her and pray that this transplant works. Thank you all.
  • Please pray for all of the wildfires — in Montana, Oregon, California, and anywhere I’ve missed.  Please pray that the fires would be put out quickly and that no loss of life or additional damage would be inflicted.
  • Hey everyone, please include my friend Donna in your prayers. She suffers from vertigo and is having a hard time right now. Thanks!
  • Please continue to pray for Karen’s sister-in-law.  She didn’t get the job she was hoping to get, so please keep praying for the right job for her to arrive. Thank you!
  • Jodi has a prayer request: My friend Kim’s best friend Shanna passed away last night. Thank you for praying for her during her illness. Please continue prayers for her family!
  • Sheila has a prayer request: Please pray for all of the people affected by the earthquake in Guatemala and Mexico.
  • As always, pray for those that don’t know what to pray for, and pray for those that are lost.  Pray for those that don’t know the words to speak, but don’t worry — because God knows what we need even when we can’t put it to words.

Now, please close with us by praying the prayer that Jesus taught His Disciples and us to pray:

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.

Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those that trespass against us.

Lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the Kingdom, and Power, and Glory
Forever and ever. Amen.

Prayers for the Week: Fruit of the Spirit – Gentleness

Hello everyone, and welcome to today’s Prayers for the Week post. Last week we looked at faithfulness, the seventh word that was mentioned as a fruit of the Spirit by the Apostle Paul.  Today, we look at gentleness.  But first, let’s look at our Bible verses again to refresh them in our minds:

22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. ~ Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV)

People, the concept of gentleness is a foreign one for this world.  There is so much non-gentle behavior, I could go on for days just listing the examples.  Examples that include violence towards others, verbal attacks on all sides, verbal abuse towards children and adults alike, and on and on.

However, if you are to look really carefully, and see what goes on beyond the news headlines, I can show you countless acts of gentleness that may just give you hope.  Gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit as Paul tells us in the Galatians passage, and it is when you see true gentleness on display that you see a person that has their name written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

Look for those acts of gentleness, and emulate them as best you can.  Keep your eyes open for the true acts that represent the fruits of the Spirit in our lives, and perhaps if enough of us do so, the violence and anger that currently invades this world will be withdrawn some, and we can see true Peace come to this world.  As the saying goes, “Let there be Peace on Earth, and let it begin with me.”

Now, please pray with me and give praise for this week’s prayer requests and praises.

Prayer Requests & Praises

  • Our prayers start off with prayers for all of the people affected in the violence in Charlottesville yesterday.  Such hatred, such terror, such violence.  Words escape me on what to write.
  • We also lift up prayers for the family of Bryan Murray, former coach for the Washington Capitals, who passed away yesterday from colon cancer at the age of 74. Please lift up all of his family in their grief.
  • Barb has a prayer request: Please pray for our 6 month old puppy. She is currently undergoing surgery for Intussusception, which is an intestinal thing. Pray for a quick recovery and no lasting side effects!
    • The good news is that the procedure was a success.  Here’s what the problem was: Renny’s surgery is done! She did great! It was a piece of string wrapped around the base of her tongue, down to her intestines! They’ve never seen that in a dog, only cats! Her tongue will likely be sore, so we need to feed her canned food for a week or so, but she’ll be fine!
  • Last week we were praying for Ilene’s dog Cooper.  We have a praise report! Cooper is home with his mom tonight! Thank you, Lord! He means the world to his Mom. He still is limping but hopefully that will heel when the strain/swelling on his spinal cord comes down – he is one very lucky dog in so many ways! I am thankful that he will be sleeping in his Mom’s arms tonight. Thank you again for all your prayers!
  • Leslie has a prayer request: A good friend of mine is going through some major losses. One traumatic death in her family/close circle of friends a week, for the past 5 weeks. She asks that we especially lift up her husband, Chris, Diane, Todd and Austin, Tammy and Sissy, Casey and Meghan.
  • We have an update on Shannah, it’s not good news so far: Update: Shannah (liver/kidney failure) is now critical, and they’ve told her husband to notify family. Please keep her and her family, esp. 3YO son, in prayer!
    • Please pray with me for Shannah: Lord, we confess that we are unable to comprehend why you call some of us sooner than others. Please be with Shannah and her family, Lord, give them Your Peace, Comfort, Strength, and Love. Lord, if Shannah hasn’t chosen You, we pray that she would choose the path to Eternal Life, and that her life, as short or as long as it is, would be a testimony to You. Lord, please be with them, especially her young son, that he would know You in time, Lord, and that he would be reunited with his mom one day in Heaven with all of you. Lord, we pray for one last miracle, that You would grant Shannah and her family the miraculous healing that only You can provide, Lord, and we pray for all of these things in the wonderful name of your Son, Jesus. Amen.
    • And then, another update on Shannah.  Please keep praying for her and her family: Update on Shannah: Another complication. Her body is spilling sugar into her bloodstream causing very high blood sugar readings. They are giving her insulin but they don’t know where it’s coming from.
  • Stephanie has a prayer request for her Daddy: Please be in prayer for my daddy! He apparently had a heart attack sometime yesterday, but was too stubborn to go to the hospital. He’s feeling better now, but they’re doing tests to see what, or if any, damage was done.
    • Stephanie’s Daddy needed some stents inserted, and then we have this praise report: I just wanted to thank everyone for the prayers for my daddy. He was released from the hospital today. God is good!!!
  • Pray for Pam’s husband Ronnie. Today he receives a PICC line as part of his treatment. Pray for a successful procedure!
  • Pray for Amanda’s husband Daniel.  He had a procedure done that will hopefully help.
  • Mrs. Lucas has a prayer request: Please pray for my friend, Madge. She has a leaky aortic valve. She is going to Duke on the 24th to see if the Dr. can do a non invasive fix. Her cardiologist in her home town said she would not make it with the open chest version! Thank you for your prayers! ( Mike, her family lived at the end of East Maple in the the 70-80’s)
  • Lastly, I’ve got a big praise report — praises for my Wife of 17 years, Cindy, on our anniversary this past Friday. I love you honey!

Now, please close with us by praying the prayer that Jesus taught His Disciples and us to pray:

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.

Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those that trespass against us.

Lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the Kingdom, and Power, and Glory
Forever and ever. Amen.
