Our Under-Appreciated Attractions at Hollywood Studios

Under-Appreciated Attractions at Hollywood Studios

Today we complete our look at our list of under-appreciated attractions at Walt Disney World. We’ve selected Hollywood Studios as our last park to explore in part because it is a harder park to select (primarily because there are fewer smaller attractions). You may remember we started with the Magic Kingdom, then progressed over to Epcot and Animal Kingdom.

For Sophie, her choice for Hollywood Studios was the Animation Academy, the attraction where a creative genius like Sophie could draw out her favorite Disney characters. I’d say that as a younger kid, this attraction may have been one of the things that sparked an interest in animation for her, which has led to her following her dream into college. So, with all that said, Sophie has missed not having the animation academy around, but is very excited that it is being re-established as the Animation Experience over at Animal Kingdom!

For Cindy, the choice was simple — the collection of exhibits and films that makes up One Man’s Dream. I know, I know — you tell me that this attraction is closed! Well, technically you are right, but it re-opened as Walt Disney Presents, and from looking at it on the Disney website, the idea is similar to what it was before.

Being a kid of the 70s predominantly, when I was a child there was no show I liked better then the Muppet Show. So, on my first visit to what was then Disney’s MGM Studios, one of my favorite attractions was Muppet*Vision 3D.

Although the attraction is dated, it is still one of my favorites, and when I’m in a nostalgic mood, it’s a great way to remember those days of yesteryear.

51 Days: The Magic of Disney Animation

Disney Animation

The Magic of Disney Animation is our choice for #Day51 of our #DisneyWorldCountdown.

Today is #Day51 in our #DisneyWorldCountdown, and on this day, we are taking a look at an attraction called The Magic of Disney Animation.  Inside this attraction you will find many things to do, including some of the following:

  • Watch a show staring Mushu from the Disney movie Mulan and explore how characters are brought to life and drawn for a movie.
  • After the movie, you can visit the Animation Station, where you can draw a Disney character at the Animation Academy, create a soundtrack to a famous Disney scene at The Sound Stage, add color to a movie sequence at the Digital Ink and Pain area, figure out what character you would be by answering questions given to you by Lumiere, and look at some of the historic items on display in the Animation Gallery.
  • In addition, there are several meet and greet character greetings here, so look for more information when you arrive as to who will be there and when they will be appearing!
  • By the way, did you know that this same building was where Lilo & Stitch, Mulan, and Brother Bear were created?

To wrap it up, here are some pictures I’ve taken from inside the building.  I hope you enjoy them!

One of the artist’s work areas, this one was for Lynn Rippberger.

Part of the building housed the Ratatouille area back in 2008.

Last but certainly not least, look who Sophie had her picture with!

Sophie got her picture with Sorcerer Mickey!

Do you and your family enjoy the Magic of Disney Animation show and attraction?  What is your favorite part about it, or why don’t you stop by and visit?  Let me know in the comments, and thanks for stopping by today!

50 Days til Disneyland – Disney Animation!

We are exactly halfway through our 100 Days to Disneyland series!  It’s been a really fast 50 days, I’m hoping that the rest of the 50 days go by as quickly, or even faster if possible!  Today we are taking a look at the Disney Animation facility, which houses several different attractions!  Located at Disney’s California Adventure Park in Hollywoodland, this building is the hub of many different attractions.  I have already talked about some of them, here is the list of what you can find in this building:

  • The Animation Courtyard
  • Animation Academy
  • Character Close-Up
  • Sorcerer’s Workshop, featuring these three interactive experiences:
    • Magic Mirror Realm
    • The Beast’s Library
    • Ursula’s Grotto
  • Turtle Talk with Crush

As I said, this building is really the hub for an incredible selection of attractions and things for you to do.  This building feels a lot like the Walt Disney World attraction “The Magic of Disney Animation” but with some different attractions housed within.

So tell me, please, do you like the Disney Animation building and all that is contained within, or do you kind of skip past it as you look for more exciting E-Ticket attractions?  Please let me know in the comments, and thanks for stopping by!

73 Days til Disneyland – Character Close-Up!

Character Close-Up, when I first heard about it, sounded like a way to get up close and personal with the characters.  Then I learned more about it, and learned that what it actually is an interesting exhibit full of original artwork, fascinating 3-D models, and other details that describes how the artists came up with final versions of the characters that we know and love.

The Character Close-Up is located in Hollywood Land at Disney’s California Adventure Park, in the same building that houses the Animation Academy.  If you remember, that building is Disney Animation building, and houses the following attractions:

  • The Animation Courtyard
  • Animation Academy
  • Character Close-Up
  • Sorcerer’s Workshop
  • Turtle Talk with Crush

It sounds to me that this will be a very interesting building to just take our time in and explore all of these interesting facets of Disney Animation!  What are your thoughts about the Character Close-Up and all of the other parts of the Disney Animation building?  Please let us know in the comments, and thanks for stopping by!

80 Days til Disneyland – Animation Academy!

Wow!  We have now hit 80 days until our trip to Disneyland!  I hope that you are finding these posts helpful in getting a little Disney Magic your way each and every day, and that you don’t think that I am bragging in any way about being able to go to Disneyland.  If you feel that way, please accept my sincere apology — that is not my intention!  Instead, this is my way of being able to deal with the time between now and when we actually get to go!  I am a Blessed man for so many reasons, and being able to go to Disney parks is the least of my blessings!

My daughter Sophie loves to draw — as evidenced by looking at her school notebooks (which are supposed to be used for schoolwork, not drawings!) — and I have even had her draw some things for me for the blog before.  In my Disney apps post from Saturday night, I shared with you the Disneyland Explorer app — that actually has the Animation Academy built into it that teaches you how to draw Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy!

The beauty of the Animation Academy is that they teach you how to draw these same characters and then some — with the help of an actual Disney Artist!  Then, when you are done, you get to take the drawing you created with you as a souvenir!  Located at Disney’s California Adventure Park, the Animation Academy is only part of the Disney Animation building, so even after you are done at the Academy, you’ll still have plenty of other things to check out as well!
