Product Review: TimeStream Software’s iOS apps Disneyland Secrets! Gold and Disneyland Mobile Guide

Disneyland Mobile Guide - Splash - Castle

My friends at TimeStream Software have released some incredible updates to their awesome apps, and I want to tell you all about them!  I am going to focus on two apps specifically because of our travel plans for the summer (shh…it’s a secret so don’t tell Sophie!) — and they are the Disneyland Secrets Gold! app and the Disneyland Mobile Guide app (cover picture shown above) for the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.

The TimeStream folks have been hard at work in improving the engine behind their apps, and I reached out to Mike at TimeStream Software to see what options they have available for Disneyland at this time.  Mike graciously agreed to let me review their apps for Disneyland because of our upcoming trip, and I have not been disappointed!  I thought I was excited to visit Disneyland already, but after playing with his apps for a few days, and taking a look at some of the stunning photography, I’m even more excited then ever!

Disneyland Secrets Gold!

The Disneyland Secrets Gold! app is worth it’s weight in gold (pun intended — please don’t stop reading!)  The TimeStream Software guys have laid out the app such that you can start at the beginning and follow their “tour” to discover the hidden secrets of Disneyland that so many people pass by on their way to the different attractions.  After you finish a section, their are links that take you to the next part of your journey.

Along my journey of the app, I have discovered some great things that I want to try when I get to Disneyland, so I thought I would share a couple of them with you to whet your whistle:

  • Did you know that you could ride the Disneyland Railroad from the tender seat — located right behind the engine?  I don’t remember Walt Disney World having this special vantage point, so this is something that I have got to witness!
  • Also on the Disneyland Railroad — did you know that you could request to ride on the prestigious Lilly Belle car?  If you don’t know, the Lilly Belle car is named after Walt Disney’s wife Lillian, and it was a special car that holds 14 people that was used to transport special dignitaries — even Presidents — around the Disneyland Railroad!  I would love to ride on this special car!
  • One of the things that I miss about Main Street, U.S.A. at Walt Disney World is that the Main Street Cinema isn’t a cinema anymore — unless I’ve been completely “Goofy” about that!  However, the Main Street Cinema at Disneyland still plays “Plane Crazy” and “Steamboat Willie” in the Cinema!  Stop and visit for a while as you enjoy these classic Disney shorts that got everything started!

The Disneyland Secrets Gold! app is available from the iTunes Store for the incredibly low price of $1.99!

Disneyland Mobile Guide

The Disneyland Mobile Guide is a self-contained app — so no wifi or cellular network is required!  At this time, the Disneyland Mobile Guide only covers Disneyland — not Disney’s California Adventure — but TimeStream Software is considering adding that into the app in a future release!

The Mobile Guide has sections devoted to several things that you would want to know about when you are at the Park, including these:

  • Attractions
  • Shows & Parades
  • Find Characters
  • Must Do’s
  • Phone Numbers
  • Tips
  • Tours
  • Vacation Planning Tips
  • and much more!

With all of these categories and more, the level of information you will find in the Disneyland Mobile Guide is absolutely incredible!  Available at the iTunes Store for a measly 99 cents, the app is an absolute steal!

Who wants to win the TimeStream Software Disney apps?

Magical Blogorail Teal: Disney for Christmas!

Welcome to those of you joining me from Capturing Magical Memories and those of you just hopping aboard. I am the 3rd stop on our Magical Blogorail.

I am very excited to be filling in on the Teal line this month!  Thanks to Dave and Mary for letting me join in as they have some regular team members that aren’t able to make it this month!  The topic this month is “Getting or Giving Disney for Christmas!  Now what?”

This is a huge topic for me because, as fate would have it, my wife and I are planning on surprising our daughter with the announcement of a trip to Disneyland for Christmas!  We have never been to Disneyland before, so this will be a huge deal for us as we take our Disney passion across the country and have a one week gig in Anaheim, California at Disney’s Grand Californian Resort & Spa!

My plans for the announcement are that we are going to wrap a box with some essential items, this is some of what I had in mind:

  1. Birnbaum’s Guide to Disneyland — they have one for kids for Walt Disney World, I’m looking to see if they make a similar one for Disneyland.  My daughter Sophie loves it!
  2. The Disneyland Planning DVD — an absolute must for any family planning a trip to Disney, especially for the first time like we are this time.
  3. Printouts of the maps of the resorts
  4. A printout of our reservation confirmation email from DVC!

We likely won’t be buying our tickets until later on, as well as our airplane tickets, so those will wait a bit.  I think there will be some other things, as I see something that strikes my mind, but if you have any ideas, leave them in the comments!

Now, after the announcement, there is still some things that we need to take care of.  This includes the following:

  1. Determining what we are doing with regards to dining.
  2. Look in more detail at all of the things that we are going to see, and prioritize our ride choices.
  3. Purchase our airline tickets.
  4. Purchase our park tickets.

This will be a fun trip, and I can’t wait until Christmas morning!  For the record, on December 25, 2012, we will have exactly 177 days until our trip!

Thank you for joining me today. Your next stop on the Magical Blogorail Loop is A Disney Mom’s Thoughts.

Disneyland Must Do – World of Color!

Over the next few weeks, we are going to explore in greater detail some of the incredible things that we want to experience when we visit Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure! There are so many things to check out since this will be our first time visiting the area, if I don’t have a list, and check it twice (and 3, and 4, and 5+ times!) then I’m certain that we will miss some things.

Today I want to talk about the World of Color show that was introduced in June, 2010 during the Summer Nightastic! series of shows, which also included the re-introduction of the Main Street Electrical Parade to the Magic Kingdom, a special fireworks show to replace Wishes, and special enhancements to the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

I’ll never forget the night that the World of Color had a special Celebrity World Premier.  It was such an incredible show because they even streamed it live on the Internet!  Since we are 3 hours later, I remember sitting in front of my computer at nearly midnight, watching this incredible display of lights, water, and music captivate me from the very beginning, and left me wanting to see it over and over again.  Even though I’ve never seen it live in person, I already know that this will be my favorite show at any of the Disney parks when I’m fortunate enough to witness it.

I went out and searched for it, and found this phenomenal video of the World of Color recorded by Inside the Magic.  There are so many great Disney movies featured in this, just take a look at this lineup of Characters or movies from the video:

  1. Ariel
  2. Finding Nemo
  3. Wall-e
  4. Toy Story
  5. Up
  6. Aladdin
  7. Pocahontas
  8. A Bugs Life
  9. Pirates of the Caribbean (this was added to the World of Color in 2011!)
  10. Chernabog (along with Dr. Facilier)
  11. The Lion King
  12. A wonderful song of love, showcasing some of the Disney greats, including Bambi, Dumbo, Tarzan, Lady & The Tramp, The Princess & The Frog, Beauty & The Beast, Snow White, and Cinderella
  13. Tinkerbell
  14. Sorcerer Mickey

The video is over 27 minutes long, but it is worth every second of your time.  I am absolutely certain that Walt Disney looks down on the World of Color — and is pleased.  I know I will be when I am fortunate enough to see it, what about you?

Disneyland: Generating an attraction list

As you all know, next year our vacation plans are taking us to Disneyland instead of Walt Disney World!  This is a first for us, we have never been to Disneyland, so we are getting excited (except for Sophie, who doesn’t know we are going!)

In the weeks ahead, I thought I would take some time to write what my thoughts are going to be about some of the attractions, parades, shows, fireworks, and dining locations so that I can generate a baseline in my own mind about them.  Then, after we get back, I can compare that baseline with what we experienced on the trip to determine how close we were to our original thoughts!  For now, I’m going to make a list of the attractions that we want to try out at Disneyland.  This is in no particular order:

Magical Blogorail Orange: My Disney Bucket List!

Welcome to those of you joining me from Your Highway in the Sky and those of you just hopping aboard. I am the 4th stop on our Magical Blogorail.

Today I’m filling in for my good friend Deb from Focused on the Magic, who is away, and when I heard that the topic was My Disney Bucket List, I immediately got excited!  This is something that a lot of people have, but I’ve never gotten around to creating one, nor have I written about it before either!  This is a fun post for me, how many of mine are on your lists?  Let’s find out!

  1. Visit the original: Disneyland!  I have always thought that there is so much more to do at Walt Disney World, but I have never been to Disneyland before!  It is a dream of mine to walk the same paths that Walt Disney did, to experience some of the attractions that he had a personal hand in creating, and to imagine what life at Disney would have been like when Walt was walking those streets.  Now, it looks like we’ll be able to do just that next year!  We currently have reservations for June 20-27, 2013, at the Grand Californian Resort & Spa, our DVC Home resort!  I can’t wait!  Only 240 days until our trip!
  2. Before we bought our DVC membership, Cindy and I always talked about how we would come to Walt Disney World and celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary at the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.  Now, of course, they are building a DVC at the GF, but that doesn’t stop me from putting that on the bucket list (even if we stay there sooner then the 25th anniversary!)
  3. Neither Cindy nor I have ever been to Hawaii.  The day that Aulani opened as a DVC resort, it went on the bucket list!  Regardless of the fact that I wouldn’t be able to walk from there to Space Mountain, that’s okay, I could enact my own version of Splash Mountain on the lazy river!  One day.
  4. When we purchased our DVC ownership, we found out that the number of points we purchased was enough for a 1BR for 1 week at Animal Kingdom.  After we got home, though, and started looking through more of the information, we also found out that the same number of points (transferred to RCI) would get us 2 weeks in Tuscany over in Italy!  One of my bucket items is to use those points to stay in Italy!
  5. Have you ever taken an Adventures By Disney trip?  I would love to take an ABD trip to Europe one year.  I don’t know when it will happen, but it is definitely on my list!
  6. Last, but by no means least on my shortened Disney Bucket List is the Walt Disney World Moms Panel.  I don’t know if this is something I will ever be selected for, but it definitely is on my list!  The unique nature of this is that it is an honor to apply, and I have been honored two years in a row to be able to say that I made it to round 2.  Ultimately, I would love for this year to be the year I get selected for the panel, but until then, I will keep the dream alive!  If you dream it, you can do it!

This is just a sample of what I have on my Disney bucket list!  I think I’ll create a special page outlining all of them and check off the ones that I’ve gotten accomplished!

What crazy and exciting things do you have on your Disney Bucket lists?  Thanks for stopping by, let me know your list in the comments below!

Thank you for joining me today.  Special thanks to all of my Magical Blogorail Orange teammates today!  Don’t worry, Deb will be back next month I’m sure! :) Your next stop on the Magical Blogorail Loop is Heidi’s Head.
